A spirit embedded in Ukrainian mythology, ‘Mavka’ are tall, round-faced, long-haired nymphs that represent the souls of girls lost to unnatural deaths. They live together in forests, caves and sheds decorated with woven textiles. They love flowers and wear them in their hair, planting them in spring to entice young men — whom they plan to tickle to death. On Pentecost, they’re known to sing, dance, and make love, to the sound of a demon’s flute.
