A-Trak's Job Interview

Should we give him a job at Oyster?

Canadian DJ A-Trak was in Australia recently. Did you know that he is still the youngest ever person to win the DMC World DJ Championships? This is him in action in 1997 at the tender age of fifteen:

Here are some other things that you might not know about him:
– He was the first DJ to win all three major DJ competition titles (DMC, ITF and Vestax).
– His older brother David Macklovitch is in Chromeo.
– He was only 22 when Kanye West invited him to be his tour DJ.
– What can't he do? We decided to put him through a job interview for a role in the Oyster editorial team.

Ariane: What experience do you have that qualifies you for this position?
A-Trak: I've been interviewed so many times that I think I would know how to conduct interviews with others now. The hunted becomes the hunter.

I notice that you are changing fields. What skills can you bring to this position from your previous work?
I'm pretty good at typing.

It is common for employers to perform a Google search on potential employees. What is the worst thing about you that we could find on the internet?
You could probably find some pretty bad outfits if you go back to the early 2000s. Sean John all day.

Do you rise to a challenge?
Is that a euphemism?

What are your short- and long-term goals?
Short-term goal is getting through this interview; long-term goal is learning how to juggle with three or more balls or oranges.

Give me an example of a situation in which you solved a problem using lateral thinking.
Did I mention that I speak fluent French?

Hypothetical: Your interview subject goes into anaphylactic shock. What do you do?
Call an ambulance, then tweet.

How comfortable are you with change?
I think I'm very comfortable with change. I adapt; it's part of my job to keep up with the times. What I'm less comfortable with is small change; loose change; you know – like coins. Always weighing down my pockets.

Have you ever been fired from a job?
No. To be fair, I've never had a job. But to answer your question, no.
