Stills Gallery in Paddington is currently hosting a haunting exhibition of work from Australian artist Pat Brassington. Brassington's as-yet-untitled body of work continues her impressive portfolio, where the boundaries between conscious and subconscious, real and surreal, are blurred. The digitally refined prints confront viewers with eerie, ambiguous scenes of emotional wastelands and often-repressed human experiences.
Turning the everyday into the unfamiliar and alien, Brassington uses language to enhance the already complex images. Intentionally unclear titles in unison with vaguely macabre scenes stimulate the imagination of audiences. Obscured identities and ambiguous shapes create powerful statements, rather than constructing grand dramas. It is the power of these windows into forgotten moments and unspoken emotions that make Brassington's work so appealing.
