Zimmermann To Open New York Flagship
We speak to designer Nicky Zimmermann about setting up shop.
Local label Zimermann will open its first New York flagship store later this month. The new retail space will be on the famous Mercer Street, nestled amongst the likes of Helmut Lang's concept store, APC, Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang. Following the opening of their first US boutique in LA last year, setting their sights on New York seems like a logical progression. The store - an archetypal Soho building with a traditional cast iron facade - will house the label's RTW, Resort and Swim collections. We caught up with Nicky Zimmermann, who helms the label with sister Simone, about setting up shop in New York.
Ingrid Kesa: Why did you decide to open a boutique in New York as opposed to another city?
Nicky Zimmermann: We have our store in Los Angeles and that's been really amazing but we've been looking for a flagship in New York since we had our pop-up summer store in Soho in 2010. That was great for us and we really wanted to open something sooner but it's just taken a while to find the right space, something that felt like the right fit for Zimmermann.
What's your favourite thing about New York?
I just love how inspiring it is, on many levels. As a designer you get a lot of inspiration from all that the city has. I love it.
What can we expect for the store?
The store is being designed by Don McQualter who we have worked with on all our stores in Australia and the store in LA. The store will feel fresh, a bit sexy but in a relaxed way. And there will be a few surprises. Simone will go back over for the opening with our team in the next few weeks. I've got our collection to work on for Australian Fashion Week at the moment but I'll go over for June and July, which is when we usually spend a bit for time in America and we will do a party or something then.
What makes a good retail experience?
For me? Beauty, things I love. Something that excites me.
