BDO Sideshows: Part 1

Best Coast, Girl Talk, Odd Future and more, now with added YouTube!

If you're someone who misses the days when the Big Day Out was at the old Sydney Showground (and Nirvana played in the Hordern Pavilion), or maybe you're just not the festival type, then perhaps sideshows are the way to go for you. Luckily, some of the bands you'd want to see (and even some you wouldn't) are putting on some shows in venues designed for a few hundred people, rather than a few thousand, so you can enjoy all the perks of a live show without having overpriced mid-strength beer spilled on your head.

Girl Talk will be performing his pop-collage mashups at the Enmore Theatre on Saturday January 28 and at the Palace Theater in Melbourne on Tuesday January 31, presumably shirtless and possibly pantless. With a reputation of being "the ultimate party starter", this is one sideshow you'll have difficulty ignoring. Dance-induced exhaustion guaranteed. Here he is at the 2010 BDO:

Looking to channel your inner-emo? Check out My Chemical Romance with special guests Closure in Moscow, if for no other reason than to see what Gerard Way has done to his hair recently. MCR will be at the Hordern Pavilion on Friday, January 27 and Eatons Hill Hotel in Brisbane on the night of Tuesday, January 24. What else to say? Oh, this video has had over 58 million views.

Sibling trio Kitty Daisy and Lewis will win audiences over with their heel-tapping, rockabilly jives. And all three of them have fantastic dress sense! See them live at The Metro in Sydney on Tuesday, January 24 and at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne on January 27. They're brothers and sisters, which makes them even better, somehow:

Foster the People will play Monday 23 January at The Tivoli in Brisbane (ticketek.com.au), Wednesday 25 January at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney (ticketek.com.au) and Monday 30 January at The Palace in Melbourne ticketmaster.com.au and oztix.com.au). Until recently I thought Foster the People were Australian, so they should fit right in.

Odd Future will be in full, super-offensive form for their sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne. Expect something unnerving, amazing and totally different. Perhaps Tyler, The Creator will eat a cockroach and vomit on stage. They'll be playing at the Enmore on Tuesday January 24 and the Palace Theater on Wednesday, February 1. Special guests to be announced. Here's the best bit of Tyler, the Creator's last album, in case you don't make it to the show:

If Best Coast are as easy to watch as they are to listen to, their sideshow will be nothing short of charming. Catch them at Manning Bar on Wednesday, JAnuary 25 and at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne on Saturday, January 28. And if you don't like Best Coast, YouTube user EternalDrummer1990 has this to say to you:

Why is is that haters seem to be the only people that comment anything? Haters really need to learn to STOP WATCHING WHAT THEY DON'T LIKE. And/or pretending they don't like it or else why would they be here in the first place? Now that's a hipster for you.

More to come tomorrow! And don't forget to head over to Oyster's brand new festival guide website, The Festivalist, for every little festival detail you can think of.
