Models! Music! Spot Naomi!
Models have been lending their moves to music videos since before MTV's lineup was taken over by repeats of Jersey Shore. From the sashaying supers of George Michael's 'Freedom! '90' to a bright eyed and barely-there Naomi Campbell in Bob Marley's 'Is This Love'>, there's no doubt that models maketh the music video. Tiffany Pilcher writes.
Kate Moss
'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' by The White Stripes (above)
The Supers
'Freedom! '90' by George Michael
At the time, Michael was trying to shake the image created for him by his record label, so instead of starring in his own clip he treated us to a slew of beautiful people. Featured are not just models, but the people for whom the term 'supermodel' was created. The all-star cast is comprised of Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz. Let's not forget the guys who also loaned their talents, like John Pearson, Mario Sorrenti, Scott Benoit, Todo Segalla and Peter Formby. Micheal appears and disappears in a... erm.. flash.
Kate Moss
'Delia's Gone' by Johnny Cash
Christie Brinkley
'Uptown Girl' by Billy Joel
Complete with dancing mechanics, men in midriff tops, and motown moves, this film clip is definitely a classic. Joel began writing the song while dating Elle McPherson, but completed it and filmed the clip while with Brinkley. Due to the couple's divorce, Joel omitted the song from his 2004 tour.
Laetitia Casta
'Te Amo' by Rihanna
In an interesting move, Rihanna, cast French model Laetitia Casta as her lover in 'Te Amo'. Although Rihanna is a regular envelope-pusher, the clip heads down the well-beaten lesbian titillation path. The clip is basically comprised of the two women falling, writing, grinding, and rolling ? perhaps don't watch this one on a seedy Sunday if you are susceptible to queasiness.
Karen Elson
'Blue Orchid' by The White Stripes
This is where it all began for Oyster favourites Elson and Jack White. The two met when she was cast in this clip and married soon after. The clip is characteristically erratic and offbeat, and is worth watching purely to see Elson navigate the vertiginous heights of her pointe shoes/stilettos/metatarsal torture chambers.
Claudia Schiffer
'Uptown Girl' by Westlife
Stephanie Seymour
'November Rain' by Guns and Roses
This 1992 clip 8 some rather interesting styling, showcasing a time when eighties extravagance overlapped with nineties grunge. Luckily, Seymour sidestepped the obligatory mullet. Seymour was dating Axl Rose at the time, but the couple later went through a nasty split, with Rose accusing the model of mental, emotional, and physical abuse.
Devon Aoki
'Bones' by The Killers
Acclaimed director Tim Burton stamped his trademark dark, kooky style all over this clip which 8 Devon Aoki.
Naomi Campbell and more...
'Change Clothes' by Jay-Z feat Pharell
This clip 8 a plethora of models in their natural environment, most notably Naomi Campbell, Liliana Dominguez, Mey Bun, Omahyra Mota, and Maja Latinovic. Watch carefully and spot the celebrity cameos.
Naomi Campbell
'Is This Love' by Bob Marley
Campbell is a serial music video starlet, and this was not only her first music video, but also her first ever public appearance. She was only seven years of age when this was shot, but due to the vintage nature of the clip she is quite hard to spot. There is speculation that she appears on the right at 0.05 and sometime later on in the clip... Let us know if you spot her?
