Drake To Produce Upcoming Aaliyah Album

It's actually happening — Timbaland and Missy Elliott are involved too!

Stop the press! The rumours are true. Everybody's favourite posthumous diva is releasing an album later this year, and Drake and his producer Noah '40' Shebib have the privilege of being executive producers. The record will feature 16 previously unreleased tracks, along with contributions from other artists and friends of the singer/actress who was taken from this earthly plane all too soon. After we posted a previously unheard Aaliyah song (featuring Drake) earlier this week, rumours were flying around all over the interwebs about a possible album. Aaliyah's brother got all up on Facebook, saying his family would not support an album project, while Drake claimed that the family had already signed off.

Now one Jomo Hankerson (Aaliyah's cousin, who runs her label Blackground with his father), has officially confirmed to Billboard that the record is indeed going ahead, saying, "We really felt like it was time. There's a real new generation that doesn't know her necessarily, and we wanted to continue her musical legacy with this new generation." Jomo also said that Drake will be appearing on "more of the records" and that Aaliyah's old buddies Timbaland and Missy Elliott will be working on it too, explaining, "Timbaland will be involved with this project. One of the records that we had that was never released was a Missy record that we obviously are going to be refreshing." New Aaliyah music... refreshing! Meanwhile, we can't decide if it's cute or borderline creepy just how much Drake loves Aaliyah, considering he never met her. Biggest fan ever!
