Dress Up x Natalie Nikitovic SS13 Photo Project
Girls, girls, girls.
Dress Up designer Stephanie Downey has collaborated once more with photographer Natalie Nikitovic. In this new series, Natalie shot some of her favourite Sydney girls (including jewelry designer Elke Kramer, PR whiz Nicole Glavan, photographer Rafaela Pandolfini and blogger Talisa Sutton) in their natural environments wearing pieces from Dress Up's SS13 collection. See the series exclusively above, and read our interview about girls with Stephanie and Natalie below.
Ingrid Kesa: It's always nice to meet a great girl! Why do you think you get on so well together?
Stephanie Downey: We have similar interests, and I think also I was drawn to Nat's genuinely happy and relaxed personality, she's lots of fun to be around.
Natalie Nikitovic: I think we work really well together because we trust each other at the end of the day. I trust Stephanie with the way she translates her inspiration and ideas into beautiful collections, and (I hope) that she trusts me to embody this by the way I see it when I photograph it.
Can you tell us a little bit about the new series?
Stephanie: The first series for AW12 was such a fun and rewarding project to work on and we didn't want it to be the end. We thought it would be great to photograph some girls in Sydney and make the most of locations there.
Natalie: The new series explores new scenarios and new babin' girls. I'll let the photos do the talkin'.
Who is your ultimate female icon?
Stephanie: Too many! Jane Birkin, Anaïs Nin, Joan Didion, Patti Smith, Kim Gordon, Julianne Moore, Coco Chanel...
Natalie: I couldn't pick just ONE ultimate icon as there are far too many females that influence the way I see things. Narrowing it down I would have to say my mum — she's just an ultimate all round heroine in my eyes. And all my amazing lady friends. They all prove to me everyday that you 'get up and get it done' and that's the only way to do anything.
Favourite female singer?
Stephanie: Kate Bush, Kim Gordon, Cat Power, Hope Sandoval, Madonna, Dolly Parton (I'm not good at choosing).
Natalie: Day time — Stevie Nicks. Night time — Donna Summer.
What's the most girly drink you've ever ordered?
Stephanie: Champagne? I've never been into sweet drinks.
Natalie: Light beer?
If you could go back in time and give some advice to your 14-year-old-girl self, what would you say?
Stephanie: It's not so bad.
Natalie: Just do it, think about it later.
Being a girl rules because…
Stephanie: Your girl friends will always be there for you, you are not alone.
Natalie: I want to say because we can wear dresses and pants, but who says boys can't do both too?
