Exclusive: Jonti's Valentine's Day Playlist
Jonti makes us a February 14 mixtape (and includes Beyonce!).
Here you were thinking that we had hearts made out of ice, willing to sweep Valentine's Day under the rug, bitterly proclaiming it as nothing but a mass-marketing ploy. Your assumption was incorrect ? we love a little romance, especially when it involves a) the consumption of an otherwise socially unacceptable amount of chocolate, and b) one of our favourite local musicians and a guest playlist. We asked Jonti to create a special mixtape in the name of February 14 just for you. Whether you'll be celebrating the night over an intimate candle-lit dinner with your significant other or watching crappy reality TV at home with your multiple cats, Jonti provides the perfect soundtrack for the occasion. We'll let him take over:
1. 'I <3 Dr. Girlfriend' ? Kyle Hall
For me, this song has that feeling of being in love, which after all, is the best feeling right?!
2. 'I Wanna Thank You For (Stepping Into My Life)' ? Dam-Funk
Dam doesn't go half way on anything. When he decides to makes a love song with a repeatable chorus, it's a great love song! There's also a great acoustic piano version shot on VHS floating around somewhere.
3. 'Kiss Me Baby' ? Beach Boys
This one's more of a make-up song rather than a general love song. You can even hear it in the backing vocals ("kiss a lil bit, fight a lil bit, kiss a lil bit"). But if you're a couple that's endured many ups and downs and still have love for each other on February 14, then y'all deserve a grand Valentine's.
4. 'Valentine' ? Jessie Ware & Sampha
Errr... Wait, maybe this should be number one? Eh, the list is in no particular order I say! But this song's a great and beautiful track that I'm sure will be the theme to many Valentine's this year. Sampha's 'Indecision' would also be pretty rad on V-Day.
5. 'Maybe So Maybe No' ? Mayer Hawthorne
Even though he's the ambassador of heartbreak, this cover of the New Holidays is just so ill. The arrangement, drums, vocals, guitar licks, arpeggiated pianos... everything about it sits perfectly like fresh LUV. Even if the chorus lyrics are a lil ambiguous...
6. 'Take It Off (Dim The Lights)' ? Pharrell Williams
Maybe a lil' late nighter V-Day Jam (or morning for the more restless). But damn... what more can you say than what P already says in this song!
7. 'While You Doooo' ? Teebs
To me, this song is the soundtrack to chillin' with your loved one in ya socks watching adventure time or rastamouse enjoying each others company with good food and tea, going for a walk etc...
8. 'Love On Top', 'Countdown' and '1+1' ? Beyonce
In terms of Valentine's Day music, how could you skip on 50% of the world's super couple. At the end of the day you probably wouldn't even need a mix, you could just get a copy of B's 4.
