Facebook buys Instagram for $1 Billion USD
Social media giant set to own extremely popular photo sharing app.
In true Zuckerberg style, Facebook CEO announced the purchase of Instagram today in a post on his Facebook timeline.
Instagram is known for its nostalgic, low-fi images of everyday moments and has over 30 million iPhone users. The purchase will allow Facebook to tap into the post-desktop market and our obsession with documenting the minute details of daily life.
If you’re already worried about Facebook owning your uploaded photos and personal messages, you now have to be wary of your mobile happy snaps too. As Facebook absorbs Instagram we can see how revolutionary, independent social media organisations could become the media giants of the future.
Facebook will keep Instagram running as a separate product but will undoubtedly increase its popularity. The acquisition could mean you’re about to see even more photos of flowers, cats and bowls of cereal through a 1977 filter appearing on your news feed.
