Franco to play Mapplethorpe
We know you've missed him.
In light of a noticeable lack of anything James Franco related on the Oyster website of late, we thought it best to reassure our readers that yes, he is still alive, and no, our love for him has not receded. What better way to reaffirm our position on his considerable talent (and beauty)? News of an upcoming film, of course!
In an upcoming biopic aptly titled Mapplethorpe, Franco is set to depict the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died in 1989 after a fruitful and highly controversial career. Mapplethorpe was well known for his large-scale, highly stylized black and white portraits, photos of flowers and nude men and above all, the stark homo-eroticism underlying some of his works.

Mapplethorpe was selected as one of ten projects to receive grants through the Tribeca Film Institute's Tribeca All Access Program. TAA will present the eleven projects?six narratives and five documentaries?at a five-day career-development program from April 22-26, during the 11th annual Tribeca Film Festival. At the the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Awards on April 26, two projects ? one documentary and one feature ? will each receive an additional $10,000 grant and ongoing support from industry professionals.
Mapplethorpe will be out in the USA later this year.
Go James!
