Frank Ocean Posts Another Letter On Tumblr
Reflecting on the meaning of life and how Oreos don't go with almond milk.
In July, Frank Ocean (who we interviewed for Oyster #93) posted a letter to his Tumblr about his sexuality. Today, he published another articulate and eloquent note, this time reflecting on fame. "No better than the next man, just doing a different thing with my life, got to," it opens. He writes about the bittersweet nature of fame — the highs ("I flew around the world in 2012... I had brunch at the rooftop restaurant from Lost In Translation. Like nine times") and the lows ("I have to write a song for someone now because they paid for my ticket and my hotel, and I let them"). Remaining humble, he reflects on his unfolding career: "it's hard to ascertain what's happened in my life the last couple of years. I suppose this is what going through things feels like. This is what happens to youth."
He also opens up about love. "I was falling for someone new, if I already hadn't," he writes about a mysterious person, also saying, "the number one rule in relationships, from what I hear, is to never just leave... All I really have to say is that love is all there is." Interspersed with his musings on existence are other facts about his life e.g. he eats steak now for the first time in ten years, and "Oreos don't work with almond milk like regular milk."
He speaks about being in the studio with Jay-Z and Pharrell: "I wonder why they still build." Perhaps we can expect a collaboration soon?
