Giles x Nine West
Fuzzy-wuzzy, googly-eyed accessories get toned down for Nine West.
Eek! Giles Deacon has teamed up with accessories brand Nine West to collaborate on a ten-piece shoe, bag and jewellery collection inspired by a furry, bug-eyed critter. The kooky designer drew the charming character a few years back, but Eek has previously been reserved for Deacon's high-end lines, playing a starring role on his Fall and Spring 2010 handbags and making guest appearances on various RTW dresses and jumpers.
Some fashion types questioned the logic of a high-end price point for what was essentially a humongous ball of fluff adorned with those googly eyes you glued on to neon pipe-cleaners in kindergarten. Personally, we were enamoured by them, but Deacon has taken note of Nine West's more modest clientele and toned down this recent collection. The accessories retain his signature whimsicality and wackiness without being too scary - which, in this case, means a reduction in the anthropomorphic element and an emphasis on neon accents, colour blocking and touches of pony hair and snakeskin.
The line will hit US stores in August, with prices ranging from US$99 to $149 for shoes, $24 to $26 for jewellery and $99 for the tote. Nothing is obnoxiously oversized, fuzzy or dinosaur-shaped, but for the price we're happy to have Eek peeping out from a handbag or dangling from a dog-tag necklace.
