gl wood exhibition: raptor’86

He’s worked with Nicki Minaj and shot editorials for Vogue, Karen, Culture, Issue One and many other titles, and now GL Wood is showing his latest works at Sydney’s Showcase Gallery. Diverging from his usual practice and subject matter, the fashion photographer’s background in fine art is brought to the fore with these ten new works. The pop art style bright birds of prey are created by combining mediums to an almost optical illusion effect. “Each piece is carefully constructed by hand. The unique collage is then blown up digitally to achieve the stylised pop art affect. The work was created to look digital, but wasn’t created digitally,” explains the New York based photographer / artist.
Citing Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Basquait as visual influences, his new works also reference 80’s comics, reflecting his experience interning with a comic book company when he was just thirteen.

The show, Raptor’86, opens on Thursday October 27, 6-8pm, running until November 5.
