Interview: Bec Parsons
The Semi-Permanent speaker and photographer gives us a snapshot of her mind.
Bec Parsons, regular Oyster contributor and photographer extraordinaire will be among fifteen internationally-esteemed professionals to impart words of wisdom at Semi-Permanent Sydney 2012. The annual conference for industry creatives celebrates its tenth year running, making for its most impressive offering yet. We caught up with the leading Australian fashion photographer.
Alanna Bromley: When did you first pick up a camera, or what is your earliest memory of using one?
Bec Parsons: My earliest memory of picking up a camera would have been when I was twelve. I remember doing a photography course learning how to shoot and print black and white film. I became totally obsessed and begged my dad to buy me a camera. He bought me the Pentax K1000 – a camera I still use today, 18 years later!
What's the best thing about February?
Those last sunny days!
What sorts of images do you have on your bedroom wall?
A beautiful screen print by an artist called Kate Banazi.
How do you deal with a model if they're in a bad mood?
I very rarely get a model in a bad mood. I won't tolerate attitude. If a model doesn't want to be there, then I'd offer for them to go home!
If you weren't part of Semi-Permanent who, of the other artists, would be number one on your 'to-stalk' list?
I have always been a huge fan of Derek Henderson's personal pictures! I can't wait to watch him talk.
What has been a recent inspiration?
I feel inspired every day by the smallest things around me; nature is a constant inspiration, the creative people around me, my husband and my magazine Love Want constantly inspires me, especially the ability to self-publish and create beautiful images.
Have you ever wanted to steal props or clothes from a shoot?
I would be lying if I said I never wanted to own half the clothes we shoot! However the reality is, they can be slightly out of my price range!

See Bec speak (along with the likes of Derek Henderson, Wallpaper Magazine, Meggs and more) at Semi-Permanent Sydney on May 11 and 12 – tickets on sale now.
