Interview: Nguzunguzu

We speak with the LA DJs (who did Kenzo's NYFW show music) ahead of their 'Warm Pulse' EP release.

Nguzunguzu are LA-based DJs Asma Maroof and Daniel Pineda. Just in case you're wondering, according to their Twitter, their band name is pronounced en-goo-zoo en-goo-zoo. Of course. We fanned out over them when we heard the track that they made exclusively for Kenzo's FW12 runway show at NYFW, which is an almost-15 minute mix of original songs:

Next month, they're going to be releasing their first new material in ages, and earlier this week they dropped a song off the Warm Pulse EP (due out on July 3 digitally and August 14 on CD/12"), which greatly excited the internet:

We caught up with Nguzunguzu ahead of their Warm Pulse release.

Alanna Bromley: How do you feel about Dolly Parton? We like the use of '9 to 5' in the mix you did for Kenzo. Have you ever met her? What would you like to say if you did?
NGUZUNGUZU: Thanks! We haven't met Dolly before, but I'd love to ask her to personally serenade me with her high-pitched chipmunk voice. It’s incredible.

Favourites are overrated... Which country or city have you played in have you absolutely hated? What would it take to go back?
We don’t want to hate on any place that supports our music, but the worst is shitty sound systems in smelly clubs.

What is your go-to TV show or film for when you're feeling a little under the weather/hungover?
Definitely the X- Files or Strange Addiction. We were addicted to Love & Hip Hop for a while, I’m curious if there’s a new season.

The way to your heart(s) is by...?
BASS.

Best YouTube find of late?
The video of Whitney Houston all wet, giving Brandy a hand written note while she sits there with Monica and Clive Davis. SHOCKING!

What was the best advice your parents gave you?
You can take the horse to the water, but you can't make him drink.

Dream scenario: You have been given the opportunity to soundtrack any runway show/film/artistic endeavour you like. What is it and who else is involved?
Hard Question! I'd love to score a Hussein Chalayan runway show or re-do the soundtrack to the Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. We'd definitely involve our collaborators Total Freedom and Kingdom, that make up The Claw.
