lfw hair and make-up how-to

Beauty may be more than skin deep but that doesn't stop us poring over the looks from LFW.

Beauty may be more than skin deep but that doesn't stop us poring over the looks from London Fashion Week.

The Hair Forecast

At Burberry, luxurious waves, all satiny and soft, would simply never do - not with all those trenches and basket weave knits on show. This is why hairstylist Neil Moodie created weather-worn hair: more fallen-out and fly-away than perfect. Spritz a generous amount of styling spray (try Bumble and Bumble's Styling Spray) throughout your hair, then, using a large barrel curling iron, tong sections at random, leaving the crown and ends free for kinks and volume. Allow to cool before raking through with your fingers to finish. Easy!

Luxe Luminosity

Luminizer was employed to add life to lackluster skin. At Peter Pilotto, sable coloured cream shadow (try Illamasqua Cream Pigment) was blended into temples and the hollows of cheeks, before finely milled shimmer powder was dusted across cheekbones and the bridges of noses. The effect was an exercise in light and shade; applying just the right amount in the areas most needed, making for a more refined and fresher face.

Lipstick All Sorts

Backstage at Mary Katrantzou, Val Garland customized an array of vibrant, rich lip shades by mixing together a selection of MAC Pigment. From tangerine to Slurpee blue and puce, the effect was unexpected. How did Garland create such a gorgeous look that might otherwise look garish? By treating the rest of the face minimally. Do it yourself by concealing only where needed, then finish by defining your lashes ever-so-slightly.

Lock, Stock and Barrel

Tendril is a ghastly word. It conjures images of barrel curls dangling stiffly from a bride's French roll. At Christopher Kane, however, pieces of hair pulled loosely from a low slung bun trailed delicately behind the cheekbones and nape of each girl. Soft and threadbare, the effect was far more romantic than any wedding day do we've ever seen. Secure your hair in a chignon (try using a double hook hair tie) before gently tugging a few pieces free from around the hairline. Finish with light-hold hair spray.
