Maya Villiger Interview & Glassons Street Style Campaign

We ask the photographer/Turned Out blogger about her collages, favourite blogs and casting process.

Oyster contributor Maya Villiger — you may remember her cut and paste collage, accessory shoot, 'Strawberries and Cream' editorial or 'Bag Lady' story— has shot the latest campaign for Glassons. The high street NZ label enlisted the NY-based photographer/Turned Out blogger to do what she does best — shoot interesting people doing their thing on the city streets. See the campaign above and read our interview with Maya below.

Ingrid Kesa: Hi Maya! What was the last thing you took a photo of?
Maya Villiger: My new son.

What camera do you always carry around?
My Leica M6.

Where did you grow up?
Auckland and Switzerland.

Where do you currently live?
Brooklyn, New York.

I like your photos of teenagers. What were you like as a teenager?
I didn't feel as cool as the kids in my pictures, that's for sure.

What's your favourite stuff to shoot?
Street portraits.

When did you start making collages? Do you have a massive collection of books and magazines that you source the images from?
I started making them for my blog in 2008 or so. I definitely buy books and magazines when there is something in there that inspires a collage so I have quite a few now. But I am a bit sick of my collaging at the moment, I need to move it forward somehow.

What's your favourite piece of clothing at the moment?
My new Eres one-piece for the NZ summer, where we are at the moment.

Let's talk about the Glassons campaign. Can you tell us a bit about the casting process?
We wanted to cast vibrant young women with a real sense of their own personal style. The pictures were to be as much about them as the clothes. They were all gorgeous, fun girls with interesting stories; I really enjoyed photographing them.

We love your blog. What are some of your favourite blogs?
Thanks! I like to look at Jak & Jil, The Sleby, and Self Service's blog, Real Men Swear, makes me laugh.

What's in store for 2013?
Being a mum, a family summer holiday in Italy (hopefully) and taking street photos.
