Model of the Moment: Julia Nobis
Julia walked 73 shows this FW12 season; we look at her career so far.
Out of all the models who appeared recently on the FW12 runways at New York, London, Milan and Paris, Julia Nobis walked the most, totaling an INSANE 73 shows. It's therefore no exaggeration to call the Bondi-born, nineteen-year-old a true 'model of the moment'. We knew we were onto a good thing when we chose her to cover Oyster #88 back in 2010, and her already burgeoning career will no doubt see even bigger leaps and bounds after her mammoth FW12 effort.
Jaz Daly from Priscilla's (the agency that still represents her now) discovered Julia, then a school girl in her uniform. "I was at Bondi Junction, waiting in a bus queue and noticed Julia from the distance. I was extremely fixated by this fifteen-year-old girl, and from that moment I just knew that she had the potential to be an incredibly successful model. She walked past me, and she was that special that I gave up my spot in the queue," Jaz tells Oyster. "From her porcelain skin, to her angular face and tall physique, she's amazing."
Julia kicked off her career on home soil at RAFW, walking for Konstantina Mittas and Alpha 60. By February 2010 she had walked for Calvin Klein in New York, Topshop and Richard Nicoll in London, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Miu Miu in Milan, and Maison Martin Margiela and Louis Vuitton in Paris. For the SS11 season in September that year, she was picked by Proenza Schouler to open and close their show, also walking for Alexander Wang, Burberry, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga. Last show season - SS11 in September 2011 - she also walked the most shows, clocking up 62 in the four cities.
In the way of major campaigns, she's done Burberry Black FW10, Balenciaga FW11 and Proenza Schouler SS11. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, the designers of the latter label, have quite a soft spot for Julia, also selecting her for their Resort 2012 and Pre-Fall 2012 lookbooks. Just a few weeks ago we announced that she was in the new Urban Outfitters catalogue alongside Ashley Smith and fellow Australian talent Rachel Rutt, shot by Cass Bird. Julia's appeared in the pages of Love, V, W, Interview, i-D, Dazed & Confused, numerous international Vogue titles, plus many other publications, as well as covering the likes of Love Want, Vogue Italia, W Korea and, of course, Oyster.
Despite her obvious impact on the industry, Julia has remained grounded. When she's not being all fashions, she's spending hours playing guitar and video games. A cool tomboy / nerd / industrial music fan who used to sit alone in the library at school reading Deltora Quest, she wears a Nine Inch Nails t-shirt but actually knows their discography, could karate chop your ass with the years of martial arts training under her belt and counts Dragon Ball Z as one of her favourite TV shows. We look back at some of our favourite moments from her career so far:
