New Zealand Fashion Week: Stolen Girlfriends Club, Salasai & Huffer

Our last reviews and backstage galleries from NZFW 2012.

Always straying from convention (which is why we love them so much), the Stolen Girlfriends Club runway presentation was set in a dark and echoey garage with cement floors that had just been hosed down. Too bad for anyone wearing opened-toe shoes. Before the show began, a voice over the loud-speaker ordered the guests — of which there were hundreds — to illuminate their mobile phones. Then out came the models to the soundtrack of Cypress Hills' 'Hits From The Bong'.

Zara Mirkin once more helmed the styling, which saw baggy PVC pants worn with midriff tops for girls, and glittering mesh-like knits with shorts for boys. A python emblem appeared across mens and womenswear along with an abstracted camo-come-floral print, while caps and backpacks proved their versatility for both sexes. The production value was incredible — we'd be lying if we said we didn't let out a giant "yewww!" during the final walk-through. It was a highlight of the week.

For AW13's 'Heartlands' collection, Salasai was inspired by film Revolutionary Road, and as such the styling had a midwestern 50s feel. Models wore head-scarfs and cowboy hats, holding dried barley in their hands or pockets. Linen and silk felt summery, but colour-blocked knitwear and quilted leather reminder us that this was for winter. Men wore chinos and slim-trousers, and female models got their nails did with miniature zigzags that mimicked the main pattern carried throughout the collection.

Celebrating 15 years in the business, streetwear label Huffer decided to show their current SS12 collection in their show, which officially closed NZFW. Held in their Takapuna store, they presented 'El Summer', inspired, we think, by shooting the shit and drinking Coronas on a beach somewhere in Mexico. And the clothes were made just for that — hassle-free dresses for girls and rolled-up shorts and non-obnoxious t-shirts for boys. The palm tree prints, polka dots, and burrito and taco motifs made us forget that it was frigging freezing outside. Huffer make fun streetwear and they are good at what they do.
