NYFW Day One with Yimmy Yayo

Yimmy Yayo's photographic recap of NYFW day one.

First up was Richard Chai, whose colourful collection countered a dreary New York sky. Richard Chai's offering was not for the faint hearted. In fact, there probably should have been a warning for those installed with pacemakers as a punchy palette of magenta, mint and coral shot up with jolts of tangerine was sent down the runway. Tropical flora, despite being the print du jour for dad's at barbecues and Hawaiian holiday-makers alike, was reframed as sartorially suave. Horizontal and vertical stripes played-off against one another in the same look. It could have been an eyesore, but it was actually more like an eye-hug. Styling choices like bright blue lips for girls and neon-soled brogues for boys tied the collection together. Next, we cycled over to 3.1 Phillip Lim...

We've always been firm believers that a girl, when on a bike, instantly increases her babe point average by up to 50%. We totally just made that figure up but you get where we're going with this. It seems like Phillip Lim has also cottoned on to this universal fact, because he themed his Fashion's Night Out event at his 3.1 Phillip Lim Soho boutique accordingly. 'Girls on Bikes' saw - wait for it - girls (and boys) arriving on bikes, who danced to beats from a Sleigh Bells DJ set in between knocking back vodka cocktails such as the 'Garance on the Rocks' served by Garance Dore her self. Don't ask what was in it though because it was so good that she drank too many and can't remember. Phillip Lim was even behind the bar serving his own signature mix. Now that's what we call good service. Afterwards was Opening Ceremony's take on Fashion's Night Out...

It was a carnival affair complete with Belvedere snow cones, cotton candy and card tricks. Very respectable adult guests (Spike Jonze, the Proenza Schouler and Rodarte designers among them) were transported back to childhood days, as Opening Ceremony launched their Muppets collaboration. Miss Piggy was the guest of honour, putting all other divas to shame, being fanned with a giant feather all night. Kim Kardashian does not even get that kind of treatment. There was also a dancehall troupe who krumped wearing Christopher Kane and a drag queen covering 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' as well as stalls including skee ball at Alexander Wang, aura readings at Delfina Dlettrez and totes for sale at Band of Outsiders emblazoned with 'I went to Band of Outsiders' thing at Fashion's Night Out and all I got was this friggin' awesome tote bag'. And to borrow that expression, it was a friggin' awesome first day at NYFW.
