Meet the Models — Olivia Thornton

Shaky photos and nervous banter with hot babes at a casting.

Yesterday, Oyster held a casting with our Fashion Week contributors Mark Vassallo and Yimmy Yayo at Luxe Studios. I got to go too, which was exciting (and also terrifying). My general disposition is always at least 70% flustered and my natural state could be described as ‘first date’, so the thought of being surrounded by literally hundreds of females — impossibly good-looking females with legs longer than my entire body — sent me into somewhat of a panic. Miraculously, and without the aid of a hip flask, I managed to keep my shit together long enough to take some very shaky iPhone photos of the girls and forget all of the questions that I had prepared for them in the process. JOURNALISM. It was really difficult not to tell every girl that she was beautiful, so I just went ahead and did it.

Olivia Thornton from Viviens was one of the first girls I spoke to, and I'm glad because she was really cool.

Ingrid Kesa: Hi Olivia, how old are you?
Olivia Thornton: I’m 19.

Cool. So have you walked at fashion week before?
Yes, this will be my third time. The first time I did it I was still in high school so I came down, walked in two shows and then went back to school.

Came down? Where did you grow up?
In Murwillumbah. It’s a small town just north of Byron Bay, on the Queensland and New South Wales border.

Does your family live up there still?
Yep.

And are you based in sydney now?
I’m kind of in-between. I've been traveling for the last 6 months, but I’m back and really enjoying it.

What’s a job you’ve done lately that you really enjoyed or was good for your career?
Well, I don’t know if this was good for my career, I mean obviously it was but it was nothing huge or anything... I did this editorial recently in Paris and the concept was kind of Alice in Wonderland... she’s stuck in this little house and she’s a giant. They had this box with these stretchy walls and I kind of had to be, like, pushing through this material and it was all really cool so I enjoyed that.

Olivia by James Nelson.

What was the last book you read?
It was The Secret.

What did you think?
Yeah! I really liked it. I keep re-reading bits because I think it’s got some relevant life advice and I kind of try to live by it a little bit, yeah, it’s got some good things to live by I think.
