Our Mountain Release Debut Single
Hear Abbey Lee Kershaw play the tambourine in a Grime band!
We love models who sing and dance. Even more, we love models who sing, dance, play the keys and shake a tambourine to heavy bass and a moody, Nick Cave-like lead vocal. Aussie babe and style superstar Abbey Lee Kershaw does at least three of these things (we haven't seen the video yet) in her band Our Mountain's debut single 'Wooden Hearts', released yesterday in anticipation of the band's upcoming album release.
Our Mountain are a Melbourne-born, Brooklyn-based quartet made up of Kershaw (tambourine, keys and vocals), her boyfriend Michael Hutchinson (vocals), Michael Noonan (drums) and Daniel Hallpike (bass). The band moved to New York at the end of 2009, but we never really gave them any serious thought until we noticed that Kershaw and her oversized rings, 70s maxi skirts and giant fur coats were missing from our favourite New York Fashion Week street style blogs this February. Turns out she was shakin' her thang (her tambourine, obviously) out on the road.
The debut song from the band is pretty intense on first listening, but Hutchinson's poetic wailings and Hallpike's thudding bass are far kinder to our ears than anything by the duo's former musical attempt, the now-defunct Kings of Leon cover band Whisky Go Go's (why?).
Kershaw isn't exactly the first model to add "slash rock star" to her title, with Karen Elson's gentle vocals and elegiac songwriting skills proving it is possible to be good at both. We have a feeling that doing so will likely raise Kershaw's already soaring indie cred in a similar vein. We just hope she doesn't quit her day job - street style blogs aren't the same without her.
