Oyster #98: #1 Crush

For our Music Issue, we asked some of our friends who their idols in music are.
Lindsay Wixson shot by Will Davidson for Oyster #95.

JEREMY SCOTT: Nicki Minaj has been wearing me lickety-split every day. I love Nicki and I love how hip hop artists — like A$AP Rocky, who I'm also working with — are bringing so much new inspiration to the music scene and the fashion scene.

LINDSAY WIXSON: James Taylor. When I want to go dancing, though, I want to say Daft Punk, but that's just the first thing that came to mind. I don't really go dancing, so… Live music? I really wanted to go see Guns N' Roses when
I was in New York, but I missed them.

KAREN WALKERBrian Jones, just for that aesthetic that he had: the shrunken little jackets, skinny little shrunken pants, Chelsea boots, and the little shirts underneath it all.

COCO ROCHA: I love Eartha Kitt! I love how she sounds so exotic and how she purrs — I've heard funny stories about her, like how she'd fall asleep in the make-up chair and literally be purring while she slept. It's just so old school. I definitely channel her at times when I'm modelling.

CANDICE LAKE: Bo Diddley. Without a doubt. The man makes me laugh and gets me dancing no matter what's going on. You might say I'm obsessed.

MARK FAST: Eminem. I just started listening to him a lot more lately, and his lyrics and his attitude towards music is pretty much the realest stuff out there, in a way. I just feel the energy in his music. I listen to him with my headphones when I'm walking, and he really gives me shivers. I wasn't a fan until just recently. I bought the rest of his albums yesterday from iTunes, and it's just, "Wow!" The song 'Business'? Unbelievable!

KARLIE KLOSS: That's hard! I love Beyoncé, because she is such an incredible woman and a role model for girls. She's an icon and she's an inspiration to me. I look up to her.

PHIL OH, Street Peeper: Biggie Smalls, 'Ten Crack Commandments'. I love a good crack tale — like The Wire.

SCOTT SCHUMAN, The Sartorialist: R.E.M. It's that combination of masculinity and femininity, brilliant lyrics — I love everything about R.E.M.

CHRISSIE MILLER, Sophomore: Stevie Nicks. I never get sick of looking at image after image of her. I would kill for her hair and wardrobe!

SUSIE BUBBLE: Elliott Smith. Because I like my quiet moments, and you can listen to his music and not talk to anyone — whoever is in the room. You get into your own space.

TAMILA PERVIS and MEL KAMSLER, ManiaMania: Patti Smith has been a muse for both of us as individuals, and as a brand. What inspires us is her strength of character and integrity in everything — from her music and her style, to her political and social beliefs.

TOMMY TON: Probably Madonna. I look up to her the most because she won't settle for anything less. When I was younger my sister forced me to watch Truth or Dare so many times. Over and over again. Favourite song to dance to? 'Get into the Groove.'

LEIGH LEZARK: Siouxsie Sioux and Madonna. They have always had my heart.

RYAN LOBO and RAMON MARTIN, TOME: Madonna is our obsession. She makes cheap, throwaway pop music, but you can't throw her away. We were introduced to Madonna at a time when we were introduced to fashion, art and culture — like Jean Paul Gaultier doing the costumes for 'Express Yourself '. She's a bit of a Warhol: she knows how to draw in all the right references at the right moment.
