Sasha goes Sci-Fi

The Russian super hits the big screen.

Sasha the slashie - has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Perhaps that's what prompted Prada favourite Sasha Pivovarova to make a move to the big screen in In Time, a sci-fi thriller that sees her play Amanda Seyfried's rather chronologically challenged grandmother. Pivovarova is in fine company, as the film also stars veteran musician-slash-actor Justin Timberlake as her son-in-law, so why is the heart-faced Russian super playing granny to a girl just one year her junior? It's all in the name of sci-fi, folks. Set in a dystopian universe where the inhabitants have only 26 years to live, the super rich can pay to top-up their body clocks, which goes some way to explaining why the tag 'GILF' is so appropriate in the case of Pivovarova's senior citizen guise.

While franchises like Star Trek don't reek of sartorial credibility, there is a rich tradition of sexiness and style in sci-fi. Who can forget Sean Young as Replicant Rachael in Blade Runner? The actor recently released a treasure trove of personal Polaroids documenting her time on the set of the cult film. Apart from the obvious allure of a young Harrison Ford, Rachael's deep red lips and fierce leather ensembles wouldn't look out of place on a modern runway (a la Miu Miu Fall 2011).

It's pretty much criminal to mention sci-fi style without paying tribute to the original futuristic fashion maven, Jane Fonda in 1968's Barbarella. In an array of metallic breastplates, mesh and barely-there S&M attire, Barbarella's pleasure-seeking wardrobe came courtesy of 60's fashion legend Paco Rabanne and paved the way for futurist collections by designers as diverse as Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, Thierry Mugler and Hussein Chalayan.

And the hot-list wouldn't be complete without seminal supermodel-turned-sci-fi-siren, Milla Jovovich, who worked Paintbox hair, bald brows and underwear-as-outerwear in The 5th Element, way before it hit the catwalk circuit inspiring endless imitations including this April Interview editorial starring Guinevere Van Seenus.
