Manning Cartell SS12 Lookbook & Interview

A new collection that's "all about the curiosity that exists between men and women."

Manning Cartell’s SS12 collection — 'Pearls & Men' — contains a sprinkling from each of the following: candy tones, texturing, graphic prints, soft tailoring, leather, sequins and erm, sportswear. Feminine pastels fuse with bold graphic printing, executed with an active-wear functionality that somehow looks incredible alongside two-piece suits in soft tailoring. I know, right! The full spectrum of lengths and silhouettes are represented, enabling one to show just as much of one’s leg as she desires. Curiously directional, the collection treads a line between aloof poeticism and sporty crispness. We chatted to designer Cheryl Manning about the label's latest offering.

Lucy Jones: What's the inspiration behind the collection?
Cheryl Manning: 'Pearls & Men' is all about the curiosity that exists between men and women. The collection is a mix of vintage glamour fused with sporty elements and masculine tailoring.

Who were your muses during the designing process?
Cara Delevingne and Melanie Laurent, they both have an attitude we love.

What can we expect from your MBFWA show? Last year you took us to Africa, the year before Spain, any exotic destinations in the works for this year?
This year we head to Mexico, with the collection inspired by Frida Kahlo apparent in the bright colours, dramatic symbolism and fearless layering of prints.

Keeping with the holiday theme, what’s your ideal destination for unwinding between collections and shows? And would you go in summer or winter?
I love having time off after the show and escaping the Australian winter for a European summer, and Greece is my favourite summer holiday destination. The sun, sea, food and music is the perfect place to wind down after working so hard.

You design as a team of three sisters. How does it work, does the oldest always get the final word?
Funnily enough we are normally on the same wave length which is amazing! We come together frequently with ideas and spend time discussing our direction, and then each of us utilise our skills and different strengths across all areas of the business.
