Skin and Threads Pop-Up Shop & Interview

It's a 'play space' as well as a retail space.

Brilliant basics brand Skin and Threads have opened a pop-up shop in Melbourne. The store is located at Little Collins Street and will be open for the next four months, stocking the new AW12 collection, as well as Italian-made footwear and accessories, a new recycled cotton range, and denim for the first time. We caught up with the co-founder Penny Cohen who designs for the label with Emma Gathercole.

Hannah Ongley: How does Skin and Threads' pop-up shop differ from the boutiques?
Penny Cohen: It gives us scope to showcase the 'fun side' to Skin and Threads such as rolled up messages for customers who purchase and an interchangeable display system. It's a 'play space' as well as a retail space.

Is Skin and Threads the result of a singular vision or two distinct aesthetics?
Em and I have a really clear vision for the brand - we both bring different skill sets to the table but the vision is united.

Have you always favoured well-made basics or did you ever go through a stage of really bad print mixing?
There's nothing like a good basic. I always believe if you have good quality basics in your wardrobe, you can't go wrong.

Skin & Threads is known for its understated elegance. What do you think is the most underrated piece of clothing in a girl's wardrobe?
The singlet. It's the hidden under layer that gives you that little extra warmth when needed.

Why did you decide to branch out into denim?
Denim is a key wardrobe 'must have' and that's exactly what Skin and Threads stands for.
