Street Style Before Street Style: Stevie Nicks

She goes her own way.

It's Coachella time of the year, so we figured who better to feature in this instalment of Street Style Before Street Style than the girl who all the girls at Coachella want to be? Stevie Nicks is not only an artistic and pop visionary, but throughout her career, she’s rocked the wardrobe of a real-life gypsy goddess; pretty much single-handedly inventing ‘boho’ as we know it.  Her feminine and inspired way of dressing may have been in and out of fashion trends over the last 40 years but her influence as a muse has remained eternal, as both designers and musicians continue to reference her. "I'll never be in style, but I'll always be different," she told USA Today in 1991.

Since starting out in Fleetwood Mac, Stevie has developed a look so uniquely mother-nature-glam-witch, that it's impossible to discuss 70s fashion (or top hats) without bringing up her name. Messy blond hair, platform boots, wide-brimmed hats, draped silk jackets, and suede, velvet, leather and lace — when worn simultaneously — are all synonymous with Stevie-style. With her wild mane and cherubic features, it’s no wonder she’s used as a constant reference point for beauty looks too.

The self-aware singer talks freely about her fashion choices, and takes them seriously as an expression of her wider creativity. As she told The Record in 1982, "The clothes I wear... that doesn't change. I love long dresses. I love velvet. I love high boots. I never change. I'm not a fad person. I still have everything I had then. That's one part of me...that's where my songs come from.” Respect to that.
