take 8 ivy

Ivy League style from the 60s to the 80s.

In the 1960s, a Japanese photographer named Teruyoshi Hayashida swung through the Ivy Schools of the States, where he spent time capturing the ingrained prep school vibe through gloriously grainy photographs. The book he subsequently produced, Take Ivy, became a bit of a prep style bible, with copies prior to its re-release by selling for more than $1000 online.

Released this month is Take 8 Ivy, the first updated edition of the book. Understandably it's created a bit of a buzz, with Scott Schuman getting in on the action early with his Sartorialist post of last month. From the looks of things, the new edition will contain Hayashida's seminal images; while Huh magazine has speculated that new images will be included from all eight Ivy League schools from the period between 1965 and 1985.

Despite the fact that Men of Habit has reported that the new edition looks less style focused, and contains more images of college life and campus scenery, in our view this shift in emphasis shouldn't be derided. The new release of images looks to capture the fresh-faced, all-American grandeur that makes up Ivy culture through its various shots of tweed in green courtyards, college-emblazoned jumpers and sun-dappled rowing teams.

Although the new book is available via Inventory, they are (predictably) sold out. We hope (for your sake) that their new stock arrives soon.
