Tavi for Wren Fall 2012

Sings and plays guitar in the name of fashion.
Tavi Gevinson for Wren short film.

She’s known as the 15-year-old fashion prodigy turned Editor of teenage magazine Rookie, but Tavi Gevinson also has a mean set of pipes. Starring in Wren’s short film Beware of Young Girls, Tavi gets her whispery chanteuse on, while covering the Dory Previn song of the same name. Incidentally, the original was written after Dory’s husband (whom she co-wrote the Valley of the Dolls film score with), went off with a 24-year-old Mia Farrow. But we digress.

We recently spoke to Gia Coppola, the director of another short film 'What's Up' for the LA label. This 60s-inspired video shows a moody Tavi wandering dreamily through the woods, getting into some angsty bedroom guitar strumming, and, presumably, pondering the meaning of feminism in a post-ironic fashion world.

If you're familiar with Lula, you won’t be surprised to learn that the video was styled by Editor-in-Chief Leith Clark, who specialises in all things dreamy, ethereal, babydoll silhouetted and otherwise Virgin-suicides inspired. Maximilla Lukacs and Sarah Sophie Flicker both acted as Directors, and the resulting film is as nostalgic as it is bang on trend.

Wren Designer Melissa Coker says of the film, "We went into the project with this new wave 60s vibe, and since Tavi has been going that way naturally with her own style, she immediately came to mind." It seems that the Jean Shrimpton-esque clothes equally attracted Tavi to work with the creative group of ladies. As she says, “When it comes to these kinds of projects I just take it as it comes and see what shows up in my inbox and think about what would be fun and interesting.

“Melissa’s clothes are at once cool and collected but dreamy. The prints can be all over the place (the poppies in this collection totally slayed me!) but the shapes make you feel all put together. And there are tons of little surprises.”

Speaking of little surprises, this isn’t the first time little Tavi has gone musician on us; she also performed a cover of Neil Young’s classic “Heart of Gold” during an industry screening last Feburary. They grow up so fast.
