Artist Christian Marclay interprets the elusive concept of time.
The concept of time is as fascinating as it is elusive, and its uncanny knack for playing tricks on our minds can be more than enough to inspire an array of different artists. As part of the reopening of the MCA in March next year, curator Rachel Kent has recognized the artisic appeal through 'Marking Time', a conceptual exhibition exploring the different artistic perceptions of time and its passing.
Complementing this exhibition perfectly is the inclusion of Christian Marclay's The Clock, a 24 hour film featuring several thousand short extracts from cinema history that emphasize a particular moment in time. The extracts are edited together to form a continuous visual sequence synchronized with the real time of visitors who watch the film. If winning the Golden Lion for best artist at this year's 54th Venice Biennale gives any insight into how good this movie actually is, we can expect great things.
