The Internet Knows What You Did This Year

Facebook and Bing tally the most popular stuff on the Internet in 2011.

According to Facebook, your parents are spending way too much time on Facebook. At least that's what the list of the most shared articles on the site in 2011 suggests. The number one most shared article on Facebook in 2011 was Satellite Photos of Japan, Before and After the Quake and Tsunami by the New York Times - but parenting, children and babies rank highly and heavily in the top 40, which includes articles on how not to dress your children like "tramps", "how to talk to little girls" and why "chinese mothers are superior".

So, what can we learn from the list? Apparently lots of people know people who dress their daughters like skanks. Apparently lots of Facebook users are school teachers who love their students, but just want to tell the parents to F-off. Apparently lots of people don't know how to talk to little girls and, apparently, lots of people know "permissive parents" who let their brats get away with murder (Rosie from The Slap, anyone?).

We can also learn that people still love babies and animals being hilarious/adorable, that a lot of us panicked upon hearing the news that the zodiac signs might be wrong, and that healthcare in the US is so bad that a man robbed a bank just so that he could get medical care in prison. Here are the top ten ? did you share or read any of these articles this year?

Most shared articles on Facebook in 2011:

1) Satellite Photos of Japan, Before and After the Quake and Tsunami (New York Times)

2) What teachers really want to tell parents (CNN)

3) No, your zodiac sign hasn't changed (CNN)

4) Parents, don't dress your girls like tramps (CNN)

5) (video) - Father Daughter Dance Medley (Yahoo)

6) At funeral, dog mourns the death of Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan (Yahoo)

7) You'll freak when you see the new Facebook (CNN)

8) Dog in Japan stays by the side of ailing friend in the rubble (Yahoo)

9) Giant crocodile captured alive in Philippines (Yahoo)

10) New Zodiac Sign Dates: Ophiuchus The 13th Sign (The Huffington Post)

Meanwhile, the team at Microsoft's Bing has released its annual report of the year's most searched people, events and places (by US internet users). What can we deduce from this list? Kim Kardashian clearly didn't spend enough time googling herself this year, because she's dropped from the most searched person in 2010 to the second most in 2011. According to Bing, the majority of internet users in 2011 have been ailing from Bieber Fever - the Canadian hairstyle was the most searched person this year and, in addition, was also the only male to make the top ten. The others people range from LiLo to JLo to Miley to Katy, which might suggest that the internet is used predominantly by pervy old men and excitable tweenage girls.

The deaths of Amy Winehouse and Osama Bin Laden were among the most searched events of 2011 and Americans clearly love their reality television, with American Idol and Dancing With the Stars being the most-searched shows. Chelsea Handler is the most searched late-night host, beating network bigwigs like Letterman and Leno and, surprisingly, Ellen Degeneres lost out as most searched daytime-TV host to some random called Wendy Williams. Finally, Jennifer Aniston is the third most searched person on the list, proving conclusively that Bing users are the more boring of all the browser users.

Most searched people in 2011:

1) Justin Bieber (Kim Kardashian in 2010)

2) Kim Kardashian (Sandra Bullock in 2010)

3) Jennifer Aniston (Lady Gaga in 2010)

4) Lindsay Lohan (Tiger Woods in 2010)

5) Jennifer Lopez (Barack Obama in 2010)

6) Britney Spears (Justin Bieber in 2010)

7) Katy Perry (Kate Gosselin in 2010)

8) Megan Fox (Jesse James in 2010)

9) Lady Gaga (Jennifer Aniston in 2010)

10) Miley Cyrus (Michael Jackson in 2010)
