the killer soundtrack
Who doesn't love a movie with a killer soundtrack? Air and The Virgin Suicides; Simon & Garfunkel and The Graduate; lost classic 'Son of a Preacher Man' in Pulp Fiction; Trainspotting ? I could go on and on.
So could Andrew Ford, but I think he'd trump me tenfold. He's just released The Sound of Pictures, a book that invites us to consider the way sound works in film. Marketing films using soundtracks is by no means something new, beginning in the fifties with the likes of High Noon, Singin' In The Rain and the James Bond series. However, this has been taken to a whole new level by the collaboration between the makers of TRON: Legacy and Daft Punk (who were recently confirmed for Coachella). Who knew the French duo were film fiends and avid followers of Steven Lisberger's TRON? Neither did Joseph Kosinski (director of TRON: Legacy) ? until he sat down with them for coffee, way back in 2007. The project involved an full symphony orchestra, blending classical music with their electronic minimalism. It's Daft Punk's first attempt at film scoring, and a pretty darn good one at that. We hope you think so too.
In other soundtrack-related news, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood has composed a score for the film adaption of Haruki Murakami's book Norwegian Wood. The film's soundtrack also 8 three songs by krautrock band Can.
There's no Australian release info at the moment, but the score is available online via Amazon Japan.
Words: Airlie Winter-Irving and Joanna Lowry
