the row sells out of $39,000 backpacks
(The average Australian income is $44,222).
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's well-respected clothing line, The Row, has made an undisclosed number of $39,000 backpacks - and they have apparently sold out. Let's just put this in perspective for one moment: the average Australian income is $44, 222. We're all for timeless style, quality, and luxury, but a backpack with a price tag roughly equivalent to an annual wage (or a small car, or a deposit on a house, or food for a whole African village) is just a tiny bit excessive. Recession, say what?
Simply called 'The Backpack', Ashley Olsen told WWD that the crocodile-skin knapsack "was the first thing that sold off the shelf." She also says that high-end designer goods are the last thing consumers will skimp on in times of economic downfall, saying, "during our last economic crisis in the US, the only thing that went up was Hermes." Well, if you're going to lose your job and default on your mortgage payments, you may as well do it in style.
