Find a new snot supplier!
If you've been having trouble finding a supplier for 'olde fashioned brain jam', children's ears or fear (tinned), we have the solution! The store is called Hoxton Street Monster Supplies, and it is part of a fascinating project to improve children's literacy in England.
The idea is based on US writer Dave Eggers' 826 literacy project, which aims to improve literacy through a focus on writing workshops and one-on-one mentoring with volunteers. The English version has been driven by the team from We Made This, who worked on the design element of the store. Their blog has fantastic photos of the store and its products, allowing you to submerge yourself in your childhood of Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton or Andy Griffiths.
Nick Hornby is an "Imagination Ambassador" for the project, and you can find his specially commissioned short story inside tins of fear. Some of the stories written by visiting kids have been published online at the Ministry of Stories:
"Zingoula lives in a lion's cave, stocked with secret gold he stole from the bank. He's great at scaring people (and with a mouth as big as a white board, ears as big as a 72 inch TV screen, and feet so big they shake the ground, it's easy to see why) but sometimes this back fires ? he's so good at scaring people he can't make any friends."
They're not taking online orders at this point ? you have no choice but to go to England!
