video: spike jonze for olympia le-tan
Featuring a sexually-suggestive Mina Harker from Dracula and a hot-blooded skeletal Macbeth.
Spike Jonze has teamed up with Olympia Le-Tan on a new short film for her label. The Where The Wild Things Are director met the designer in 2009, when they set up a trade-off: if Le-Tan - known for her embroidered clutches based on classic literary covers - made Jonze a Catcher In The Rye tapestry, he would make her a movie. Many months and 3,000 felt part later (hand-cut by Le-Tan), the stop motion film has finally premiered via Nowness.
Called Mourir Aupres de Toi, or, To Die By Your Side, the short takes Paris' iconic Shakespeare & Co bookshop as its setting. When the shop's owner (played by Le-Tan's father) closes for the night, the books protagonists come to life. Macbeth the skeleton, voiced by Jones, falls for a sexually-suggestive Mina Harker from Dracula, narrated by Soko. The two lovers face the odds, including a guest appearance by Moby Dick, finally united in the closing credits in which Soko's song 'Hump and Jump' is an appropriate backing track. You'll see why.
