volleys get a revamp
Well worn since 1939.
Had it been any other brand of shoe hurtling towards him after being launched by a hippy, John Howard would have had a lot more to say about it. But it was a Volley, and as such, the most iconically Australian brand of street/sport footwear to date. Volleys have helped Australians win countless tennis matches, provided a creative outlet for Angus Young, and have always been there to slip on (or throw at a former prime minister) in a typically Australian moment of shoeless panic. For Howard to kick up a fuss would have been, quite simply, unpatriotic.
In an attempt to further proper recognition of the Volley as an integral part of Australian sporting and pop culture history, the brand has teamed up with VICE to revamp its image and to restore faith in the shoe as the quintessential sneaker. The products of this recent collaboration are in the form of three short films featuring hipster protagonists, apocalyptic landscapes and, of course, the Volley as the fashionable resolution to most problems. The directors have adopted the roles of story tellers, each putting a uniquely modern spin on the traditional Volley story. Check out the three Volley genesis videos here.
The directors of the short films (ENDSUM, Dan Brophy and Tooth & Claw) hail from highly creative backgrounds, with projects centered around animation, narrative and music videos and film production. Heres to another 72 years of well-worn Volleys, and the tennis glory that comes with them!
