Watch: Blood Orange Documentary

Blood Orange just, you know, eating French fries with Beyonce and Florence Welch. No biggie.

In November last year, British TV network Channel 4 asked Devonté Hynes (aka Blood Orange, formerly known as Lightspeed Champion) if he would be interested in being interviewed for a music special on their program 4Play. As Hynes explained on Blood Orange’s Tumblr a few hours ago: “Being the dick that I am, I said sure but only if I make it myself and send them the complete package to air. Surprisingly, they said yes, and so it aired on British TV late last year.”

The video’s director, Alan Del Rio Ortiz, has just uploaded the video onto his Vimeo account and the 11 minute ‘documentary’ is, without giving too much away, very entertaining. Neon Music plays the painfully indie interviewer, highlights include when he launches into a description of Blood Orange’s Coastal Grooves, listing off a spiel of disparate influences including “…early Madonna meets modern Ke$ha…but with a sort of Mozart twist, meets John Cage, in a back alley…” Karley Sciortino, of Slut Ever fame, also makes a cameo in the video, as does Aaron Pfenning.

Blood Orange has also just produced the debut album for local band and Oyster favourites Bleeding Knees Club. Called Nothing To Do, it will be released on February 27. We can’t wait!
