Watch: Inside Joan Rivers' Closet

These are bags from the Year One. I think I carried this one when I was dating Moses.

Most women in their 70s prefer a nice pair of slacks, but Joan Rivers isn't most women. The 78-year-old actress/comedian/all-round awesome lady is Time Out New York's latest Closet Case, taking the magazine inside her "typical New York closet." We wouldn't go quite so far as to call the space "tiny", but it's certainly more edited than you might expect from someone who has been living in New York accumulating clothing since 1933. "These are bags from the Year One", she declares, "I think I carried this one when I was dating Moses."

A practical balance between plain black basics and luxurious vintage furs, with plenty of ostentatious jewellery thrown in to the mix, it appears Rivers spends as much time rearranging her closet as she does her face. Trays of perfectly arranged pairs of earrings glide out of well-oiled drawers, and if she discovers that a certain jacket goes with a certain necklace she'll place that necklace in a snap-lock bag and pin it to the jacket's hanger. But it's not all about meticulous coordination. "Anyone who takes fashion serious is a fool. What's the worst that could happen? You're going to go out and put something on, and you're going to look like an idiot? So What! You can take it off."

And if you didn't love her enough already, she buys shoes at Payless and attacks expensive vintage clothing with the same ruthlessness as she does other celebrities. Who else but Rivers would have the balls to chop the hem off a Valentino gown?

Also peek into Courtney Love's closet.
