Watch: The Trailer for Lena Dunham's Girls

HBO's new show bridges the gap between Gossip Girl and Sex and the City.

Trying to thrive - or even just survive - in New York City is a genre in itself. Entire films, books and TV shows have been dedicated to chronicling the ups and downs of people fighting to carve out a space for themselves in a city as tough as it is magnetic. Lena Dunham's new show Girls follows three women in their early twenties surviving more than thriving in the big city, heralding in a fresh, humorous take on this well-worn storyline. As the 25-year-old creator of Tiny Furniture fame said at a recent press tour, "Gossip Girl was teens duking it out on the Upper East Side and Sex and the City was women who figured out work and friends and now want to nail family life. There was this whole in between space that hadn't really been addressed."

Dunham not only produces and directs the show, which was picked up by HBO and has comedic genius Judd Apatow as executive producer, but also stars as Hannah, a publishing intern and aspiring writer in her early twenties whose parents have just cut her off (hence her funds lasting her three and a half more days in New York... Maybe seven) and whose boyfriend treats her heart like it's "monkey meat." Alongside two friends played by Allison Williams and Jemima Kirke (Dunham's Tiny Furniture co-star), we see Hannah navigate the tricky worlds of sex, friendship and career never bereft of her awesome brand of deadpan humour and Gen-Y self-indulgence. All-round-awesome-girl Lesley Arfin, famous for her Dear Diary column in Vice later turned into a book, former Editor-In-Chief of Missbehave and Rookie contributor, is also on the writing team so we're really looking forward to this one.

Girls will premiere on April 15 on HBO.
